How Much Beta-Carotene Should An Average Person Take Daily? Are There Risks Of Excessive Intake?

Beta-carotene is a carotenoid widely found in orange-yellow and dark-green vegetables and fruits. It also acts as a precursor of vitamin A in the human body. It is converted into vitamin A on demand in the body to maintain normal vision, epithelial mucosa and immune function. Many people purchase beta-carotene supplements separately, yet most cannot distinguish between dietary sources and supplement dosage recommendations, nor understand the potential risks of excessive intake. Combined with national nutritional standards and classic clinical studies, this article elaborates on reasonable intake for ordinary people.

 

I. Daily Beta-Carotene Requirement for Ordinary People

 

In nutritional assessment, vitamin A supply is commonly measured by Retinol Activity Equivalents (RAE). According to Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes (2013 Edition) and WS/T 578.4-2018 Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes Part 4: Fat-soluble Vitamins issued by the National Health Commission, the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) of vitamin A for adult males is 800 μg RAE/day, and 700 μg RAE/day for adult females. As a plant-derived provitamin A, beta-carotene from food has low conversion efficiency: 12 μg of dietary all-trans beta-carotene ≈ 1 μg RAE. Purified beta-carotene in supplements has higher conversion efficiency, where 2 μg equals 1 μg RAE.

 

Converted to food-sourced beta-carotene, the adequate daily dietary intake for healthy adults is approximately 6–10 mg, which can be achieved with a diverse range of vegetables. The Chinese Dietary Guidelines (2022) recommend adults consume 300–500 g of vegetables per day, more than half of which should be dark-colored varieties. Spinach, broccoli, carrots, pumpkins, mangoes and papayas are excellent sources. For example, 100 g of carrots contains roughly 8 mg beta-carotene. A daily serving of spinach plus a small amount of pumpkin can meet the body's demand for vitamin A conversion. Most healthy individuals do not need extra beta-carotene supplements.

 

If supplementation is truly required, the National Catalogue of Health Food Raw Materials stipulates that the upper recommended daily dosage of beta-carotene supplements for adults is generally 8 mg. For daily health care, the dosage should preferably be controlled at 2–6 mg/day, and long-term self-administration of higher doses is not advised. It is critical to note that risks differ greatly between intake from natural foods and high-dose supplements.

 

II. Hazards Caused by Excessive Beta-Carotene

 

Many people have heard that eating too many carrots turns skin yellow, known as carotenemia. This is the most common sign of overconsumption. When large quantities of beta-carotene are ingested over a long period, the human body has a ceiling for converting it into vitamin A. Surplus beta-carotene deposits in the stratum corneum of the skin, causing an orange-yellow discoloration on palms, soles, alae nasi and perioral skin. Unlike jaundice caused by liver disease, the sclera (whites of the eyes) remains unyellowed. This condition is mostly benign; skin tone will recover spontaneously within 2–6 weeks once high-carotene foods are reduced, with no liver damage.

 

However, this only results from heavy food intake. High-dose beta-carotene supplements carry more serious risks. Two landmark large-scale randomized controlled trials reshaped the nutrition community's understanding. The ATBC Study followed 29,133 male smokers supplemented with 20 mg beta-carotene daily, finding an 18% rise in lung cancer incidence and an 8% increase in all-cause mortality. The US CARET Trial administered 30 mg beta-carotene plus vitamin A to smokers and asbestos-exposed populations, which led to a 28% higher lung cancer risk, forcing the early termination of the trial.

 

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) concluded after comprehensive evaluation: high-dose beta-carotene supplements increase lung cancer risk among smokers and asbestos-exposed people. In contrast, consuming vegetables and fruits rich in beta-carotene carries no such risk and may even offer protective benefits. It is hypothesized that synergistic effects from multiple carotenoids, polyphenols and other substances in whole foods differ greatly from isolated purified supplements.

 

In addition, long-term mega-dose beta-carotene supplementation may bring other potential impacts. As a fat-soluble carotenoid, excess beta-carotene competes for intestinal absorption channels and hinders uptake of other fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin E and vitamin K. Some individuals experience gastrointestinal and neurological discomfort including diarrhea, nausea and headaches. It must be emphasized that natural foods can barely reach the ultra-high doses found in supplements. There is no need to worry about eating carrots, pumpkins or spinach regularly; risks almost exclusively come from high-dose purified supplements.

 

III. Groups Requiring Cautious Supplementation & Practical Intake Advice

 

Smokers, former long-term smokers and asbestos-exposed individuals: self-administration of beta-carotene supplements is not recommended; priority should be given to natural fruits and vegetables.

 

People with diabetes, hypothyroidism or abnormal liver and kidney metabolism are more prone to carotenemia. Consult a dietitian or physician before supplementation if needed.

 

Pregnant and lactating women: obtain beta-carotene preferentially through diet. If supplements are required, use them strictly under medical advice to avoid cumulative overdose risks.

 

Healthy adults should obtain beta-carotene primarily from dark-colored vegetables and orange-yellow fruits. A balanced diet can meet nutritional requirements. Beta-carotene supplements should only be considered at low doses after professional assessment when vitamin A deficiency is confirmed. Ordinary people should not blindly purchase high-dose beta-carotene health products. Beta-carotene from natural foods is highly safe, but purified supplements cannot be taken at high doses for extended periods, especially for smokers who should watch out for elevated lung cancer risk.
