Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the human body cannot synthesize on its own and must be obtained through diet. They mainly include linoleic acid (LA) from the ω-6 series and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from the ω-3 series. These fatty acids play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of cell membrane structures, regulating inflammatory responses, supporting neural development, and preventing chronic diseases. A 1999 study by Simopoulos AP published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition pointed out that the severe imbalance in the ratio of ω-6 to ω-3 fatty acids in modern Western diets has led to an increase in the incidence of chronic inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, and certain cancers.

Omega-3 fatty acids include ALA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Among them, DHA and EPA are primarily found in deep-sea fish and fish oil. Studies have shown that adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids helps reduce serum triglyceride levels, inhibit platelet aggregation, improve endothelial function, and suppress the production of pro-inflammatory factors.

Traditionally, EPA and DHA are mainly derived from fish oil. However, as marine resources deplete and environmental pollution intensifies, finding alternative sources has become a research focus. Omega-3 algal oil is extracted from the cultivation of specific microalgae (e.g., Schizochytrium sp.). It is not only rich in DHA and EPA but also avoids the risk of heavy metal contamination, making it particularly suitable for vegetarians and environmentally conscious consumers.

 

Furthermore, the production process of algal oil is highly controllable. Biotechnological techniques can optimize its fatty acid composition, enhancing product consistency and stability. This makes omega-3 algal oil a safe, efficient, and sustainable source of omega-3 fatty acids.

The Relationship Between Essential Fatty Acids and Chronic Diseases

 

Simopoulos noted that the metabolites of essential fatty acids-such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and lipoxins-play a central role in regulating immune responses and inflammatory processes. An imbalance in the ω-6 to ω-3 ratio leads to increased production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the body, potentially inducing or exacerbating chronic low-grade inflammation and various chronic diseases.

 

Cardiovascular Diseases

 

Omega-3 fatty acids effectively reduce serum triglyceride levels, slow the progression of atherosclerosis, and lower the risk of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Multiple clinical trials have shown that daily intake of over 1 gram of EPA + DHA significantly reduces coronary heart disease mortality.

Inflammatory Autoimmune Diseases

 

For example, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids can alleviate joint pain and morning stiffness, reducing the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Research indicates that omega-3 algal oil exhibits similar anti-inflammatory effects.

Neurological Disorders and Cognitive Health

 

DHA is abundant in brain tissue and participates in synapse formation and nerve conduction. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids in the elderly can delay cognitive decline and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. In children, omega-3 algal oil supplementation also helps improve concentration and learning ability.

 

Mental Health

 

Epidemiological and clinical studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids have potential therapeutic value for depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. EPA, in particular, is believed to play a dominant role in antidepressant mechanisms.

 

Essential fatty acids are indispensable for maintaining health and preventing chronic diseases. As interest in plant-based nutrition grows, omega-3 algal oil, as a clean, green, and efficient source of omega-3 fatty acids, is emerging as a new trend in dietary supplementation. Future efforts should focus on promoting its application and strengthening research on its long-term safety and efficacy to benefit more populations.
