The Impact Of DHA From Algal Oil On Breast Milk DHA Levels in Lactating Women: Insights From A Randomized Controlled Trial in China

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, plays a crucial role in infant brain development and visual acuity. Given its importance, ensuring adequate DHA intake during lactation is vital. However, population-based research on DHA supplementation in lactating women is limited, especially in China. A recent randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers from the Nanjing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the School of Public Health at Nanjing Medical University (https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/14/16/3410) aimed to investigate the effects of DHA supplementation from algal oil on breast milk DHA levels in lactating women.
Study Design and Participants
The study recruited 160 healthy lactating women in Nanjing, China, who were 30 to 50 days postpartum. Participants were randomly assigned to either a control group, which received a placebo capsule daily, or a supplement group, which received one capsule containing 200 mg of DHA from algal oil daily. The intervention lasted for 8 weeks, during which participants' dietary patterns were also monitored to assess their impact on the intervention's effectiveness.
Key Findings
The results of the study revealed significant increases in breast milk DHA levels among women in the supplement group compared to those in the control group. Specifically, the mean DHA concentration in breast milk increased from 0.29% to 0.47% in the supplement group, while it remained relatively stable at around 0.29% in the control group. This finding suggests that DHA supplementation can effectively enhance the DHA content in breast milk, potentially benefiting infants' development.
Furthermore, the study found that dietary patterns influenced the effectiveness of DHA supplementation. Women with higher baseline intakes of fish and seafood showed greater increases in breast milk DHA levels when supplemented with DHA from algal oil. This indicates that combining dietary sources of DHA with supplementation may yield optimal results.
Implications and Future Directions
The findings of this study have important implications for public health and nutrition policies. They highlight the potential benefits of DHA supplementation for lactating women, particularly in regions where dietary sources of DHA may be limited.
