Additionally, the bioavailability of fish oil is a concern. Fish oil in its natural triglyceride form is more easily absorbed by the body than its processed ethyl ester form, which is more commonly found on the market. Moreover, fish oil is prone to oxidation, and its oxidation products can lead to issues such as muscle tissue softening, a fishy odor, and even induce programmed cell death, potentially leading to chronic diseases. Finally, marine pollution is a significant concern, as deep-sea fish may carry mercury and other heavy metal pollutants, posing a potential threat to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and infants.

 

The Advantages and Application of DHA algal oil

 

In contrast, DHA algal oil, as an emerging source of DHA, has several significant advantages. First, DHA algal oil is produced by cultivating specific species of microalgae under strictly controlled environmental conditions, ensuring the product's purity and lack of contamination. Second, compared to fish oil, DHA algal oil provides a higher proportion of DHA while keeping other unnecessary polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly EPA, at lower levels, which may otherwise affect infant growth and development. Furthermore, the production and processing technologies for DHA algal oil are well-established, ensuring stable product quality, ease of storage, and resistance to spoilage. In recent years, several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have begun to use DHA algal oil as the primary source of DHA in infant formula to support children's healthy growth.

 

International Recommendations and Market Trends

 

For the reasons mentioned above, several international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), have recommended the appropriate supplementation of DHA in infant formula for both preterm and full-term infants, and have pointed out that fish oil with high EPA content is not suitable as a nutritional supplement for these groups. In China, leading industry brands such as Heinz, Beingmate, and Yili have also started using DHA algal oil to increase DHA content in their products, reflecting the growing adoption of this change in the domestic market. In fact, since 2005, the market share of infant formula containing DHA algal oil in the United States has risen rapidly, surpassing 30% by early 2010, showing a strong growth trend.

 

Despite the fact that fish oil has long been considered an effective source of DHA, due to its inherent limitations and safety concerns-particularly when targeting infants-DHA algal oil, with its higher safety, better stability, and superior nutritional value, has gradually taken the lead. In the future, with the publication of more research findings and technological advancements, it is believed that more countries and regions will choose DHA algal oil as the ideal source of DHA, contributing to the healthy growth of future generations.
