In China, leading industry brands such as Heinz, Beingmate, and Yili have also started using DHA algal oil to increase DHA content in their products, reflecting the growing adoption of this change in the domestic market. In fact, since 2005, the market share of infant formula containing DHA algal oil in the United States has rapidly increased, surpassing 30% by early 2010, showing a strong growth trend.

 

International Recommendations and Market Trends

 

For the reasons mentioned above, several international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), recommend appropriate DHA supplementation in infant formula for both preterm and full-term infants. These organizations also highlight that fish oil with high EPA content is not suitable as a nutritional supplement for these groups. In China, relevant departments, including the National Health Commission, are actively responding to international standards by encouraging manufacturers to choose the safer and more reliable DHA algal oil as the source of DHA. This shift is not only reflected in the infant food sector but has also extended to the adult health supplement market, reflecting the society's heightened focus on food safety and health.

 

In summary, while fish oil has long been considered an effective source of DHA, its limitations and safety concerns-especially when targeting infants-have made DHA algal oil a more dominant choice due to its higher safety, better stability, and superior nutritional value.
