Can DHA Algal Oil Still Be Consumed After Japan's Nuclear Wastewater Is Discharged Into The Ocean?

Oct 24, 2023

On August 24, 2023, Japan officially began to discharge nuclear wastewater into the ocean. It is estimated that approximately 31,200 tons of wastewater will be released in 2023, and according to the plan, the discharge time will last for at least 30 years. This has led to a panic buying of various marine products. Against this backdrop, many parents have begun to worry about whether they can still consume DHA algae oil.

To answer this question, we first need to understand the source of DHA algae oil. DHA algae oil comes from Schizochytrium sp. or Crypthecodinium cohnii, and the commonly seen DHA algae oil on the market is mostly derived from Schizochytrium sp. Schizochytrium sp. is a single-celled organism that can only be identified under a microscope, and is not a marine plant that is caught from the ocean, so DHA algae oil is not affected by marine pollution in terms of raw materials.

After optimizing the Schizochytrium sp. strain through laboratory cultivation in the early stage, an internal strain library was established for screening, and production began by fermenting the strain in large stainless steel tanks before physically separating and purifying the oil. The entire production process completely eliminates the risk of environmental pollution, and has no direct relationship with any regional seawater. There is no radioactive pollution involved in any stage of the production process. All production raw materials (each batch) must pass strict testing before being used.

Therefore, qualified DHA algae oil on the market can be safely selected and consumed. DHA algae oil sourced from Schizochytrium sp. is a renewable and sustainable production resource, with sufficient supply, so there is no need to stockpile it.
