Xiao Min and colleagues, in their paper titled "Screening of High-Yield DHA Algal Strains and Their Products' Role in Preventing Alzheimer's Disease," highlight the cultivation of DHA-rich microalgae for the production of biologically active DHA oils. These algae provide a sustainable source of DHA for food and health supplements, suggesting that sustained DHA supplementation may benefit cognitive function in individuals at risk for AD. The high concentration of DHA in neuronal cell membranes plays a pivotal role in preserving cellular integrity, facilitating neurotransmission, and modulating inflammation, which collectively may reduce the risk of developing AD. The study underscores the importance of optimizing algal resources to enhance DHA yields, offering a viable and accessible means for regular DHA intake that could inhibit or slow AD progression.

 

DHA Algal Oil and Its Neuroprotective Effects

Their findings indicate that incorporating DHA algal oil supplements can elevate plasma and brain DHA levels, potentially mitigating or halting AD pathogenesis. The DHA in algal oil accumulates in the body, contributing to brain health maintenance and neuroprotection. Specifically, DHA may impede beta-amyloid aggregation, decrease neurofibrillary tangles, and preserve redox homeostasis in the brain, thereby exerting therapeutic effects on AD pathophysiology.

 

DHA Levels and Alzheimer's Risk Reduction

A recent study published in the journal *Nutrients* by the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) reveals that individuals with higher blood DHA levels have a 49% lower risk of developing AD compared to those with lower levels. Led by Dr. Aleix Sala-Vila, the research suggests that dietary supplementation with omega-3 DHA, particularly for ApoE4 gene carriers who are at approximately double the risk of AD, could decelerate disease progression. Such a cost-effective and low-risk dietary intervention could save billions in healthcare expenses.

 

The prospective observational study, conducted within the Framingham Offspring Cohort, involved 1,490 dementia-free participants aged 65 and older. Researchers examined the relationship between red blood cell (RBC) DHA and AD onset, along with interactions with the APOE-ε4 allele. Increased DHA consumption appears to reduce AD incidence, especially among high-risk individuals carrying the APOE-ε4 allele, indicating that these individuals might derive greater benefits from higher DHA levels than non-carriers.

 

The growing body of research on DHA sourced from algae and its implications for AD prevention showcases the potential of this natural compound to mitigate neurodegeneration. Cultivating DHA-rich microalgae strains, understanding the neuroprotective mechanisms of DHA, and exploring the benefits of DHA supplementation for AD risk reduction, particularly in genetically predisposed populations, represent promising avenues for advancing AD prevention strategies.
